Susceptibility weighted imaging: Evaulation of the swallow-tail sign in Parkinson disease

Susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) is a special gradient-echo MRI sequence taking advantage of the effect of not only the magnitude but also the phase of a signal coming from a voxel. Compounds with different magnetic properties variably interact with and distort the local magnetic field and thus alter the phase of local tissue resulting in a change of signal.

Spondylodiscitis is a rare inflammatory disease of the spine. Its symptoms are caused by local inflammatory destruction, toxic, direct nerve root and spinal cord compression. Typical symptoms are severe spinal pain, fever and neurological deficit depending on the location. It can be diagnosed by MR and laboratory tests.
