[The discovery of endothelium-derived relaxing (prostacyclin, EDRF) and contracting factors (EDCF) in the last decade opened up new vistas in investigating the regulation of the cardiovascular system. In this review, recent results of the research of a 21 amino acid residue EDCF, called Endothelin, including its discovery, isolation, biosynthesis, tissue specific expression, receptors and the characteristics of the Endothelin converting enzyme are summarized. Based on present knowledge of the... tovább »
[Recently great interest has been concentrated on potassium channels inhibited by intracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP-sensitive potassium channels), which connect the metabolic state of cells with their electrical activity. Channel closure initiates the secretion of insulin from pancreatic ß-cells; a number of hormones altering the level of blood-sugar act via these channels. The channels are present in neurones; they regulate both in the cell bodies and the nerve terminals (e. g.... tovább »
[The high incidence of intra-articular ligament injuries of the knee justifies a more frequent use of noninvasive diagnostic procedures such as the native CT scan. In positive cases, a correct preoperative diagnosis may be produced; a negative result is especially important, since diagnostic arthroscopy may be avoided. Due to the anatomic arrangement of the knee joint ligaments and theis density, which differentiates them from adjacent structures, an accurate, reliable, and reproducible image... tovább »
[Simultaneous 2D echocardiography and 2017 scintigraphy were performed during dipyridamole testing (DT) in 57 patients with suspected IHD. The dipyridamole dose was 0.56 mg/kg/bm in 4 minutes. If no effect was observed, the test was continued from the eighth minute with a dose of 0.28 mg/kg/bm in 2 minutes. 2D echomonitoring of the left ventricular motion using apical views was initiated at the beginning of DT and continued for 7 or 13 minutes in case of the longer test. After 6.5 or 12.5... tovább »

[Thoracic sympathectomy is beneficial in the treatment of peripheral occlusive arterial T 1 circulatory disorders of the upper limb (Buerger's disease, Raynaud's disease) and palmar and axillary hyperhidrosis (1-3). In 1987, Sebestyén and colleagues described it in Hungary (4). We have been performing laparoscopic surgery in our clinic since 1990, and in 1991 we performed thoracic sympathectomies using laparoscopic instruments. ]
[Posttracheotomy strictures are often detectable only long after decannulation. That observation led the authors to make endoscopic follow-up examination of the tracheae of tracheotomized patients. Since 1973, 103 of 600 myasthenic thymectomized patients required tracheotomy. 45 of them were examined with fiberscope under topical anesthesia two months to thirteen years after tracheotomies (47 cases). The tracheal lumen was expressed as an estimated percent age of the original cross section. ... tovább »
[The frequency of the most common mutations of the CFTR gene was studied in families having children with cystic fibrosis. This study included 40 Hungarian families with a total of 140 family members. The results of mutation and haplotype analysis demonstrate that the most frequent mutation in the Hungarian cystic fibrosis population is the F508 which accunts for 70% of all the mutations. The most frequently occurring haplotype is B: 95,7% of the F508 CF chromosomes and 36% of the non-F508... tovább »
[The tasks of the Public Health Service and the Medical Officer Service go far beyond the classical public health epidemiological system, to include prevention of public health endangering conditions and life threatening diseases. The Public Health Service is competent to supervise the efficient operation of the healthcare institution. Optimal operation of the system requires the use of an information system relying on modern computer technology. Conceptually, the information system is... tovább »

[A significant part of the phenomena of the health care crisis in our country is due to the haphazard, disorganised and often non-existent nature of controls. A key objective of the planned reform processes is therefore to renew and consolidate it. ]
[I have slightly twisted Mihály Tompa's immortal line: 'Let him exchange hearts who exchanges homeland I'. The poet could hardly have imagined that his heartbreaking metaphor would become flesh and blood reality a century later, because it is possible to exchange hearts. In fact, twenty years after the first heart transplant, a Hungarian heart can be exchanged for a Hungarian heart; the heart of one unfortunate man can save another unfortunate young man.]
[There were many good reasons why Csaba Fáklya (SZDSZ), in the context of the Hungarian Medical Chamber's resolution on the reform, requested that members of the Parliament's Social Committee meet with members of the Presidency and a representative of the Ministry of Public Welfare. One of the most important issues for them is the isolation of MPs from life. They go from committee to plenary, from group meetings to political meetings. Their reading is nothing more than the tabling of motions,... tovább »
[In the summer of 1991, the National Welfare Board announced and published in the specialised press its action programme for the transformation and renewal of the health sector. Even at the time of its publication, the programme contained a number of controversial theses, but it was unanimously welcomed by the medical community, which was interested in the creation of a new type of health care system.]
[On the eighteenth day of December last year, László Surján, Minister of National Welfare, proudly reported to the Parliament of the Republic of Hungary that, "I think back to a year ago, when the budget debate in Parliament and the debate on the Social Security Fund budget were significantly out of sync in time. At the time, those of us who were and those who were not guilty of this were all disapproving of the fact that this situation had arisen. This year we managed to present the two... tovább »

[Medical history is full of documents that show the inexhaustible ideas of doctors who wanted to increase the number of their patients. Sometimes this included discrediting colleagues or simply promoting themselves. Let us look at some examples.]

[In difficult times, it is good to know that we are not alone. Our health system in crisis and your reform efforts are not lonely, as the health system war is raging - albeit at different levels - across Europe, across the world.]
