[The psychological Well-being and Burnout among Ambulance Personnel]

[The aim of the study: The aim of the presented study was to investigate the psychological well-being and burnout among ambulance personnel of the Hungarian National Ambulance Service. Our goal was to identify the ambulance specific stressors that negatively affect the psychological health of personnel and lead to burnout. Material and method: The quantitative, cross-sectional study included 1979 ambulance personnel. Level of burnout was measured by Pines-Aronson Burnout Inventory. SPSS version 17.0 was used for statistical analyses. Types of analyses included Khi square test, ANOVA and correlation analysis. Level of significance was defined at p<0.05. Results: The 40% of ambulance personnel are affected by job-related stressors. The heightened and constant state of readiness does not let time for discussing work-related experiences. There was significant correlation between burnout level, years worked at NAS, and the evaluation of workplace circumstances and climate. Conclusion: Due to the results of the present study we created different possibilities of prevention and intervention that can help handle the symptoms of burnout among ambulance personnel.]

[The Florence Nightingale Medal - Its History and the Hungarian Connection]

[Apropos of the International Nurses Day, authors discuss Nightingale’s impact on the development of nursing and her role in international nursing history. They consider as one of the main achievements of Nightingale that she raised the profile of nursing to an appreciated profession, thereby contributing to modifying the widely held view on women’s role in society in Hungary, too. After reviewing the developments related to the educational empowerment of women in the Hungary of the 19th century they suggest that these changes as well as awakening of the nation might explain the decision of the Hungarian Red Cross Society to table a motion at the 8th International Conference of Red Cross Societies in London with a view to establishing a medal in honour of Florence Nightingale. The Hungarian proposal was approved by the international conference in Washington in 1912 and a resolution was passed to institute the Florence Nightingale Medal. ]

[Nurses Knowledge and Tasks of real Time Evacuation of Inpatient Care Institutions]

[In our modern, globalized world, there is a significant increase in the number of events requiring immediate action where coordinating the rescue, health care and placement of several people at the same time. Unfortunately, we can count not only on international, but domestic relations, for various mass disaster threats and events, whether it is a natural disaster or a different form of artificial disaster. It is of the utmost importance to treat such a qualified situation in inpatient care and health care institutions, where there is a large number of patients and caregivers with limited self-reliance and movement. Although it is important to emphasize the importance of disaster prevention in the domestic context, in cases requiring immediate and rapid intervention, there is a great deal of responsibility and responsibility for nursing staff. By questionnaire surveys, we investigated the catastrophic and evacuation knowledge of inpatient care nurses and the system and method of acquiring these skills. After the results were processed, we concluded that our assumptions proved that the knowledge of the target group in question was very incomplete. In order to increase efficiency, we consider it of the utmost importance to develop a procedure based on unified principles but to adapt to the local conditions of the given institution and to develop its ability-based education system. ]

[Quality of Life of Cancer Patients’]


[Aim of the study: This research is the part of an extended examination. It’s aim is to assess the cancer patients’ quality of life, how the diseas effects in the way of life, and also the psychologycal burden of the patients. Furthermore to assess the patient’s knowledge of their desease. Material and Methods: The research is descriptive, empirical, supplemenary, which in nurses and patients in oncology departments of Hondvéd Hospital in Budapest and Bács-Kiskun County Hospital in Kecskemét were attend. The method of the survey was an individual questionnaire. The evaulation of the results made with MS Excel and SPSS. The complete evaluable questionnaire’s rate is 74,9% (N=131). Results: the patients judge their own health and quality of life to low in a rate of 56,6%, and 75% of them stated that their way of life and their daily routin has changed in a significant extent. 50% of the responders described their actual emotional condition with a negative indicative, and also occur different psychic disfunctions amuong them. For example the depression in a rate of 17,5%, anxiety is in 18,5%, and reduced self-evaluation in 14,1%. A significant majority (76,3%) of respondents don’t possess the appropriate knowledge. Conclusions: The disease effect on cancer patients’ way of life and quality of life in a significant way. Patients are exposed to a significant psycholigycal burden. ]

[Safe Handover - Opportunities to improve Patient Handover]

[Mistakes, errors made in the patient handover process can result in severe outcomes, but with appropriate measures it is possible to decrease their numbers. Therefore, we considered it important to develop a methodology which would help us analysing our internal processes. Getting to know the current situation well provides the opportunity to implement those changes into our daily work which focus on the actual problems, and which could lead to measurable improvements in our everyday work processes. ]

[Burnout, a physical, emotional and spiritual exhaustion, is caused by chronic emotional stress, and is considered to be the end-state of a multistep process. It is most frequently observed among professionals who work with people and are faced with people's negative emotions every day. Apart from emotional stress, certain personality traits as well as high workload have also been linked to the development of burnout. Burnout symptoms include physical exhaustion (depleted energy, tiredness, illnesses), emotional exhaustion (hopelessness, depression, suicide), and spiritual exhaustion (pessimism, negative attitudes, dehumanization of patients). Approximately 20% of all medical practitioners in several European countries, as well as in the United States, have been demonstrated to show burnout symptoms. Its prevalence appears to be similar across countries, but shows differences according to medical specialty. Doctors mostly seeing patients with easily curable diseases or with good prognosis have a lower risk of burnout, whereas those seeing chronic or dying patients on a daily basis are at a much higher risk. The prevention is possible in a number of ways, such as ensuring proper work environment, providing personality development and soft skills trainings, and participation in clinical case study workshops. The Humania Professional Socialization Workshop was set up with prevention in mind at Semmelweis University in 2002 to formally provide medical students, as part of their vocational training, with skills and techniques that later will help them cope with hard emotional situations and thus reduce the risk of burnout.]

[There is plethora of international publications on the topic of burnout among health professionals. The most comprehensive study in Hungarian on this issue was written fifteen years ago by psychiatrist Sandor Fekete. In the past fifteen years there has been a growing interest among both the scientific community and the public in studies on health psychology, behavioural sciences, sociology of health and quality of life as well as in the harmful effects of work stress. The first part of the study presents clarification of the concept of burnout, its development, course, assessment and treatment, whereas the second part gives a brief overview of the history of burnout research in the past thirty years with special focus on the most recent international and Hungarian literature, as well as on changes in research trends.]

[Comparative analysis of job and life satisfaction among theatre nurses in Hungary and Germany]


[The aim of the study: The objective of the study was to assess and compare job and life satisfaction affected by workplace problems, stress, rewards, success and social support. We analyzed the coping strategies applied by the employees to solves the above problems. Material and method: The anonymous data collection was carried out in October, 2015 by applying AVEM and an own-edited socio-demographic questionnaire among theatre nurses from Hungarian and German clinics. Results: The employees evaluated stressful situations and problems differently in the two groups examined. Job satisfaction was equally important for both groups, but it affected life satisfaction of the Hungarian employees to greater extent. The stress management of the Hungarian employees was more effective in spite of the fact that German nurses used more coping strategies. Social support had a positive effect on overcoming the workplace problems in both groups. Conclusions: Job satisfaction of the nurses has a beneficial effect on their life satisfaction. The ability to divide work and private life and stress management are different among the nurses. Job satisfaction can be improved by workplace health promotion programs.]

[Epidemic among health care providers: burnout]


[Aims of the study: To track the changes since 2008 in the degree of burnout among health care workers in Csongrád County, and to examine its connections with the evaluation of own health, frequency of psychosomatic symptoms, the intent to leave the profession, and the measure of fear from becoming unemployed. Methodology and sample: This is a cross-sectional study carried out through a self-designed self-report questionnaire sent to registered members of MESZK living in Csongrád County. Results: The number of burned-out health care workers increased since 2008. Burnout correlates with physical health (p<0.000), the intention to leave the profession (p<0.000), and the fear of losing the job (p<0.000). A significant increase could be observed by nurses starting their career. Conclusions: Burnout prevention trainings would be important also by career starters, which could also prevent profession leaving. ]

[The prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms among ambulance personnel in a national subsample]

[BACKGROUND - The ambulance workers face a lot of mental stress and physical demands in their everyday life. The physical demands can be originated from caring heavy equipment and moving patients. The poor mental health can strengthen physical problems, too. In this study our aim was to detect and compare the musculoskeletal status of ambulance personnel in two regions of Hungary. SAMPLE AND METHODS - On a voluntary base a cross-sectional anonymous, standardized self-fill-in questionnaire (Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire) was used with additional items. All ambulance personnel over 18 years old were involved in the study who worked in direct patient care either in the North-Hungarian or in the West-Hungarian Region of the country. RESULTS - In the regional representative sample N=810 workers answered our questions. Out of them 587 persons (72.5%) reported about some musculoskeletal problem during his lifespan. Most of them suffered from lower back pain (448 persons, 55%), back pain (318 persons, 39%), neck pain (250 persons, 30.9%). Parallel with the aging and with the time spent working for the ambulance service more and more overall discomfort can be detected (p=0.013; p=0.020). Having a second job affected the level and frequency of discomfort negatively (p=0.005). CONCLUSIONS - More than 70% of the ambulance workers experienced musculoskeletal problem during his emergency workers carrier which may worsen the quality of his work and his personal life. To handle the situation primary prevention, screening and possibilities for recreation should be forced among ambulance workers. ]
