Nurses‘ competences in preventive cardiology

Introduction: The nurse education in the Czech Republic is based on the recommendations of the European Union, respecting the outcoming knowledge and skills of general nurses, formulated in basic competence criteria. Cardiovascular diseases rank among the main causes of death not only in many developed countries, but also in developing countries. Accent should be put on prevention of these diseases and the nurses should provide for efficient education. Goals and methods: The goal of the article consists in presenting the results of the analysis of the available sources focused on nurse education and the resulting competences in the field of cardiology, as well as in describing the system of health-educational activities of nurses in preventive cardiology in selected EU countries. The methods of research and structured interview were used. Results: The nurse‘s task in prevention of cardiovascular diseases consists in educating the public on influenceable risk factors which have significant impact on the incidence of cardiovascular diseases, but also on people‘s quality of life. It is important to alert the people to changes in their own risk behaviours and to motivate them to activities leading to improved life style. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the nurses in preventive cardiology make use of the competences acquired through pregradual studies. However, the current practice requires increasing competences within postgradual education.

[Postoperative pain management today in Hungary - Part 2 ]

[According to the literature, the practice of postoperative pain relief in Hungary is an area to be developed. Postoperative pain is a key issue for patients. Surveys show that more than 59% of patients are worried about postoperative pain. Their concerns are not baseless, as recent studies have consistently shown that pain has not been properly treated after surgery. It has also been shown that postoperative pain can lead to a deterioration in the quality of life of patients. The aim of our study was to assess the degree of postoperative pain in patients and their satisfaction with pain relief. We conducted interviews based on personal inquiries with a total of 168 patients, with the involvement of certain surgical departments of three Hungarian institutions. Based on our results, we found that patients report remarkable pain after surgery, so the practice of postoperative pain relief is in many cases unsatisfactory. Comparing the results and the international literature, postoperative analgesic practice can be considered as an area to be developed. ]

[The role of nurses and their tasks in early sepsis management]

[The Surviving Sepsis Guideline (SSG) is a document that proposed new solutions in the diagnostics and treatment of sepsis. The methods identified were the 100% oxygen therapy, fluid resuscitation, blood culture and microbiological analysis, empiric combination antibiotic therapy, lactate monitoring, comparison of PCT and CRP, and surgical opening. Using the above mentioned methods has proven to improve the quality of sepsis treatment and the safety of patients. Sepsis -6 protocol has been highlighted by the authors as a process that is easy to implement in terms of cost while remaining highly beneficial. This recommendation should also be well known for nurses that do not work in emergency units. This will help recognise sepsis at an early stage, and provide guideline in the analytical examination and the possibilities within the competence. ]

Use of Imogene King’s Nursing Model in the Care for a Patient with Heart Arrhythmias


Objectives: To discover the benefits of implementation of Imogene King’s nursing model into nursing care in a patient with arrhythmias. To find out how these patients are limited in saturation of their own needs and what are the most severe limitations for patients with arrhythmias. Material and methods: Qualitative research using semi-structured interviews. The interview with patients with arrhythmia was conducted in accordance with the structure of King’s nursing model. Results: The research group consisted of 20 respondents; 13 men and seven women. All respondents expressed satisfaction with their cooperation with staff. The respondents described a change in the subjectively perceived state, the psychic state, and emotions. Conclusions: Assessment of the subjectively perceived quality of life of patients with arrhythmias using the King’s interaction model allows nurses to see the patient from the holistic point of view and plan and provide individualized care.

[The role of APN in Coping with the COVID-19 Pandemic]

[Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, new challenges appeared in the field of the health care system all over the world and in Hungary as well. There has been a very high pressure on the workers and on the whole system too. We have been working with people who were diagnosed with Covid-19 since last March that is why we see all of the difficulties appearing in the hospitals. This publication is a literature review in which I examined the role of the APN during Covid-19 pandemic. We overviewed new, foreign literatures which I found on online databases using keywords. The biggest changes in the role of the APN were experienced in the USA and many of these can be transferred into the hungarian medical system too.]

[Epidemiology, comorbidity, etiology of depression and cardiovascular diseases]

[Psychiatric problems are a common comorbid condition in patients with cardiovascular disease. Depression is a well-known risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease and mortality too. Psychiatric and cardiovascular diseases are prevalent public health problems in the western world. Depression is associated with endo­thelial dysfunction and increased platelet aggregation, which may explain the consequent cardiovascular complications. Specific affective temperaments may be associated with special cardiovascular diseases. Antidepressant therapy does not only reduce depression but also cardiac mortality.]

[The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus has recently dramatically increased worldwide. While many factors contribute to the startling data, including changes in the diagnostic criteria of glucose intolerance, increase of life expectancy, manifestation of diabetes at younger ages, and increased detection of unrecognized diabetes due to more efficient screening, the genuine, steep rise in the incidence of diabetes is explained by the increasing prevalence of obesity. Among the late complications of both diabetes and obesity, cardiovascular diseases are particularly important. Insulin resistance due to visceral obesity plays a central role in the pathomechanism of type 2 diabetes. In the prevention of both type 2 diabetes and obesity, non-pharmacological intervention such as life style changes should be considered first. Supplementary pharmacological treatment should target all cardiovascular risk factors.]

[The role of nurses in the clinical trials]

[Aim of the research: To assess the occupational duties and responsibilities of nurses in relation to clinical trials in Hungary. Research and sampling methods: Self-administered questionnaire was used among the colleagues working in the field of clinical trial and IBM SPSS 22.0 software using descriptive statistical methods was performed. Results: It was found that the majority of nurses complete the duties of a study coordinator and the task of a study nurse simultaneously. They were involved in everyday activities that characterise the assistance of patients and in the management of paper-based documentation during clinical trials. Lack of knowledge in English language was identified for the reason of reduced-functionality of nurses in 59 cases. Conclusions: nurses have complex responsibilities, although they meet the requirements when it comes to the professional tasks and documentation obligations, but in the case of more complicated professional challenges nurses get fewer opportunities, mainly because of their poor English skills.]
