[Trace elements are found in the living organism in small (trace) amounts and are mainly essential for living functions. Essential trace elements are in humans the chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), fluorine (F), iodine (I), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), and questionably the boron (B) and vanadium (V). According to the biopsychosocial concept, mental functions have biological underpinnings, therefore the impairment of certain neurochemical processes due to shortage of trace elements may have mental consequences. Scientific investigations indicate the putative role of trace element deficiency in psychiatric disorders such in depression (Zn, Cr, Se, Fe, Co, I), premenstrual dysphoria (Cr), schizophrenia (Zn, Se), cognitive deterioration/dementia (B, Zn, Fe, Mn, Co, V), mental retardation (I, Mo, Cu), binge-eating (Cr), autism (Zn, Mn, Cu, Co) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (Fe). At the same time, the excess quantity (chronic exposure, genetic error) of certain trace elements (Cu, Mn, Co, Cr, Fe, V) can also lead to mental disturbances (depression, anxiety, psychosis, cognitive dysfunction, insomnia). Lithium (Li), being efficacious in the treatment of bipolar mood disorder, is not declared officially as a trace element. Due to nutrition (drinking water, food) the serum Li level is about a thousand times less than that used in therapy. However, Li level in the red cells is lower as the membrane sodium-Li countertransport results in a Li efflux. Nevertheless, the possibility that Li is a trace element has emerged as studies indicate its potential efficacy in such a low concentration, since certain geographic regions show an inverse correlation between the Li level of drinking water and the suicide rate in that area. ]

[INTRODUCTION - The loss in quality of life caused by mental illnesses has been growing in developed countries. This study aims to quantify the possible gains in quality of life by advantages of cariprazine therapy while treating patients with negative symptoms of schizophrenia in Hungary. Comparator therapy was defined as the currently available second-generation oral antipsychotic drugs. METHODS - In order to estimate the reachable gain in quality of life with cariprazine, an 8-state deterministic Markov cohort model was developed. Data was gathered from relevant scientific literature and public databases. The main assumptions regarding patient pathways have been validated by clinical experts, based on their real-life experience. The number of patients with negative symptoms of schizophrenia was estimated by the same methods as well. Sensitivity analyses were conducted on the input parameters. RESULTS - When compared with currently available second-generation oral antipsychotics, cariprazine generated an estimated increase of 0.05 quality-adjusted life years per patient in 2 years run. The deterministic sensitivity analysis confirmed the robustness of the results. Based on data of the National Health Insurance Fund and the scientific literature, a total gain of 450 quality-adjusted life years is expected at national level over a time horizon of 2 years. Even higher gains of QALY can be expected for longer time horizons. CONCLUSION - Based on conservative estimates significant health gain can be generated, if all patients with negative symptoms of schizophrenia would receive the adequate cariprazine therapy in Hungary instead of the currently used second-generation oral antipsychotic drugs. ]

[Reading the title most of us (but not everyone) can recall from our memories the classic heroes of the movie of Sergio Leone and we can almost hear (or not?) the melody of Ennio Morricone. This sentence is full of strangeness, isn’t it? However it’s hardly at all sure that everyone had seen the movie (indeed certainly not) and the catching music is maybe elusive. Like or not we are related to classics of lipidology, as well. Most of the readers of this review of the three clinicians know much (but not everything!) of these topics but probably for some of them this paper will arise their further interest. We are going to separate the “inseparable”, only together functioning whole thing in order to build a model in our thinking regarding its operation. This is what we do with the scientific cognition. We are making models, simplifying indeed… (sometimes erroneously) proclaiming. Let’s throw out our (or at least try to do it) the stereotypes living inside us. Let’s talk about the “always” good HDL-cholesterol, the bad LDL-cholesterol and the ugly (or cruel) triglyceride, actually (and now the analogy is lost of the three key players of the classic western movie) about the other faces of the together ugly and bad lipoprotein(a) according to a lot of opinions! As everything is connected with everything in the human body and nothing is accidental - nothing can be only good, bad or ugly nor the Good, the Bad and the Ugly yet.]

[2010 a new, complex screening program started in Hungary, named Nationwide Comprehensive Health Protection Screening Program in Hungary 2010-2020-2030. The screening was installed on a specially furnished lorry, which is able and will be able to get anywhere from big cities to the smallest villages. The Program as part of the “Heart and Vascular National Program” works with the support of 74 professional-scientific societies and companies. The screening program took place in a specially furnished lorry. The lorry has an easy access to the disabled, operation was performed with the quality control and permission of ÁNTSZ. Near the lorry there were activities for the preservation of health and prevention of illnesses. Within the framework of the Program in the largest mobile diagnostics center in Hungary 37 comprehensive surveys in free form. This enormous special screening station allows 5,100 tests to be performed at each of the 200 screening stations nationwide. The screening program for over 20 years provides 15 million trials on 3,000 scenes and 1 million adult visitors in free humanitarian. The European National Health Program and the National Program for the Prevention and Treatment of Cardiovascular Diseases co-ordinated by the Association of Hungarian Medical Associations (MOTESZ) are implemented by consensual cooperation. Based on the results, it was re-confirmed that Hungarian population belonged to the high risk group in several aspects. Authors also outlined solution plans for general risk reduction and disease prevention. ]

[This study has four parts. In the first part of the study the career of successful aging construct has been presented through the literature of gerontology from Cicero until nowadays while highlighting the problems that were until now hindering the validation of that scientific construct. Suggestions for kin concepts instead of successful aging (e.g. active, optimal, vital, effective aging) have been reviewed in detail. The second part of the paper presents the results of longitudinal and cross sectional empirical studies about influencing factors of successful aging. The third part refers to the research outcomes of ageing people by the positive psychology and suggests the definition of positive aging as a state of good biological, psychological, social and spiritual functions which coincides with above average levels of psychological immunity and coping capacity and abilities of inventing successful strategies in the day-to-day practices. The fourth part of the paper describes an empirical study with 7,506 participants and demonstrates how the (emotional, psychological, social, spiritual) components of well being contribute to the maintaining of old-age physical and mental health further the psychological immunity, savoring capacity, positive orientation and flourishing. While comparing the flourishing levels of specific age groups there was a clear decline of individuals above 65 years with weakening psychological immunity. The study defines positive aging as the ability to maintain flourishing under fire of ageing associated challenges.]

[In Antal Szerb’s novel, The Pendragon Legend, which was first published in 1934 (its first English translation came out in 1963), the excentric Earl of Gwynedd experiments with strange creatures. Reading the book based on mystic elements as well as their mockery, the reader gets quite a bizarre knowledge of axolotls. In this review, a detailed history of this amphibian (Ambystoma mexicanum) in Western scientific research is offered; beside the scientific data, of which presumably Antal Szerb was aware, the main trends in the axolotl studies of the recent decades, both their successes and failures, are also defined.]
