[The control of the osmoregulation has become of particular interest by progress in the following fields: 1. New research data showed that one of the main function of the cell is the maintenance of constant volume against extracellular and intracellular osmolar perturbations. It is regulated by loss or gain of electrolytes and non-ionic osmolytes mediated by membrane transport processes. 2. The activity of the vasopressin hormone is regulated by the newly discovered aquaporin water channel proteins. 3. Development of modern laboratory osmometers which enable precise determination of osmotic pressures of the fluids in the organism in clinical practice. New data on volume control of the cells and on aquaporin channels in various clinical conditions may provide safer treatment of fluid and electrolyte disturbances, the diagnostics and therapy of congenital and acquired nephrogenic diabetes insipidus and of the serum inappropiate ADH syndrome, as well as other pathologic conditions with water balance disturbances.]

[INTRODUCTION - The analysis and evaluation of sick-pay data presents great challenge for a health insurance fund. It is very important to collect sick-pay data related to the medical diagnosis of the patients. DATA AND METHODS - The aim of the study is the analysis of sick-pay data in County Vas, Hungary. The new approach focuses on the ICD (International Classification of Diseases) based sick-pay reports which contains the cause of sicknesses according to ICD terms. The data was derived from 1998. RESULTS - During the period involved there were no significant change in the number of ICD codes used by the doctors. The cases shorter than 30 days account for 84,43 % of total cases, while they account for the 41,05 % of total disability to workdays. The most common ICD group measured by the number of cases is group Nr. X. (Diseases of the respiratory system), while most common as measured by the days spent on sick-pay is group Nr. XIII. (Diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue). Significant differences were found between men and women. Analysing the diagnosis within the main groups - ranked by the number of cases - the diseases of respiratory system and of the musculo-skeletal system are found in leading positions. Based on the number of sick-pay days the diseases of musculo-skeletal system are on the first place. CONCLUSIONS - Results of this analysis can provide valuable information for both the National Health Insurance Fund and the physicians and have contributed to the implementation of the national „Disability to work Monitoring System”.]

[Three decades ago, LAM was launched with the goal of providing scientific information about medicine and its frontiers. From the very beginning, LAM has also concerned a special subject area while connecting medicine with the world of art. In the palette of medical articles, it remained a special feature to this day. The analysis of the history of LAM to date was performed using internationally accepted publication guidelines and scientific databases as a pledge of objectivity. We examined the practice of LAM if it meets the main criteria, the professional expectations of our days, when publishing contents of the traditional printed edition and its electronic version. We explored the visibility of articles in the largest bibliographic and scientific metric databases, and reviewed the LAM's place among the Hungarian professional journals. Our results show that in recent years LAM has gained international reputation despite publishing in Hungarian spoken by a few people. This is due to articles with foreign co-authors as well as references to LAM in articles written exclusively by foreign researchers. The journal is of course full readable in the Hungarian bibliographic databases, and its popularity is among the leading ones. The great virtue of the journal is the wide spectrum of the authors' affiliation, with which they cover almost completely the Hungarian health care institutional system. The special feature of its columns is enhanced by the publication of writings on art, which may increase Hungarian and foreign interest like that of medical articles.]

[INTRODUCTION - The aim of the study was to explore the differences in motivations between successful quitters and smokers who just consider quitting. Self-reported motivations of exsmokers' smoking cessation and the reasoning of current smokers who consider quitting were analyzed. SUBJECTS AND METHODS - The study is based on Hungarostudy Health Panel conducted in 2005, which is the second wave of Hungarostudy 2002, a national representative health survey of the adult Hungarian population. Of the subjects involved in this follow-up study, data from 3701 persons could be analyzed. RESULTS - About half of the respondents had never smoked, one fifth of them had quitted and 28 percent smoked. More than half of the current smokers (52%) contemplated on giving up smoking. Among ex-smokers and contemplating current smokers alike (38-40%), disease prevention was mentioned as the single most important reason of cessation. Financial reasons were mostly mentioned by current smokers; ex-smokers were more likely to explain their decision with deteriorating health, the occurrence of certain diseases. Among these, cardio-vascular morbidity played the most important role in smoking cessation while cancers, respiratory disease and diabetes also significantly increased the odds of quitting. Social pressure was a reason for quitting mostly among women and elderly persons. Among current smokers, those living in partner relationship and the better-off tended to entertain thoughts of quitting because of social pressure. CONCLUSION - The results confirm the importance of cardiovascular diseases in smoking cessation: although people emphasize primary preventive purposes of their cessation efforts, in fact secondary prevention, i.e., existing circulatory and heart problems play the major role both in actual cessation and in quitting considerations.]
