[The effects of night shifts on nurses]

[Aim of the research: The present study aimed to investigate the effects of night shifts on the somatic and psychic health, sleeping habits and substance use of nurses. Research and sampling methods: A self constructed questionnaire was administered online in October 2014 (N=396). Data were analyzed with SPSS 19.0 using descriptive statistics, chi-square and unpaired two-sample t-tests program (p<0.05). Results: Nurses having night shifts evaluated their health as worse (p=0.031), backache (p=0.019) and heartburn (p=0.029) were reported more frequent. They consume significantly more cigarettes (p=0.011). They experience more work related stress (p=0.002) and sleep disorders (p=0.006). Regarding burn-out (p=0.438) and chronic diseases (p=0.061) there was no significant difference between nurses with and without night shifts. Conclusions: Night shifts affect the health and substance use of nurses and disturb their biorhythms. ]

[Investigation of the factors infl uencing among members of the care team in terms of the identity of the leadership]

[Aim of the research: The objective of the research is to map the different subcultures, examine in detail the role of subgroups and the influencing factors that are determining the relationships between the members of the Institution’s healthcare provider teams. Research and sampling methods: Data and information collection was advisedly planned, guided and implemented with help of personal communication techniques. With regard to the final form of data collection method based on standardized preliminary research plan, I’ve selected partly structured and unstructured interview forms, with closed and open questions. The analysis was performed by interviewing 10 chief physicians and 10 head assistants. Results: 100% of the interviewed leaders related that competencies are determined primarily by skills, human attitudes and personality. The analyzed subjects confirmed that well defined expectations expressed by leaders and open communication is enhancing the close co-operation between team members and is reducing hereby the work stress. The investigation underpinned that good co-operation of team leader couples, or lack of co-operation has strong impact on the team’s performance and on the relationships between team members. Conclusions: Identifying, understanding and handling our own or other people feelings, the behavior with our fellow creatures is matter of emotional intelligence, and not of cognitive capability. With help of deep interviews, valid facts, leadership manners, management of conflict situations were identified and pointed at the influencing factors of department’s micro culture and the work atmosphere of the organization. Diversity of the work, rate of workplace monitoring, rate of qualifications and skills required for the job, quality of interpersonal relationships are contributing to workplace satisfaction and the evolution of team spirit among colleague ]

[Care of patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis]

[Aim of the research: Assessment of workers’ knowledge regarding patients suffering from a rare neurological disorder, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Research and sampling methods: The target groups were: intensive care unit (Group I) and home care service nurses (Group II). The authors chose a self-developed questionnaire study, what was filled out on www.online.kerdoiv.com by 161 nurses. Results: Considering graduation from Group I. 17 (20%), from Group II, 27 (36%) have diploma in nursing education. Based on the answers, the ratio of the results are almost identical. Over 40% declare that they do not have sufficient knowledge, nurses can professional protocols in practice, but not always correctly. Taking the recommendation over 70% of answered the questions correctly. More than 95% of the two surveyed agreed, that they are able to give advice on care. 18.87% of Group I, and 20.97% of Group II attend case discussions weekly. Conclusions: Nurses need to supplement their knowledge about the disease, and technical protocol. Additional information needed to develop the competencies of communication among nurses. I would consider to develop a practice guideline on the disease, which members of the care team will uniformly apply. ]

[The real cost of caring for seriously ill patients - compassion fatigue or satisfaction]

[The improvement of the Hungarian hospice network and the increasing number of people dealing with the seriously ill are reflected by the annual hospice reports (2001-2013). However these reports also draw the attention to the cumulating mental and spiritual burdens of carers which can lead to fatigue and burnout. On the base of practical experience we surveyed the mental and spiritual condition of the caregivers of seriously ill patients and also reviewed research findings and the professional literature on the exposure to imperilment. The grounds of professional literature’s research were the Hungarian and international databases. We favoured studies published in Hungarian or English between 2000 and 2014 primarily on carers working in palliative and hospice service. One of the main profits of reviewing the professional literature is getting more detailed information on the mental state of professional caregivers. Relatively new element in researches is studying the relation between burnout and compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue. It includes studying of symptoms and coping strategies. These all enable a better understanding of causes and help us to support hospice carers with more effective methods to protect them from mental and spiritual exhaustion.]

[Who helps the caregivers? - Psychosocial characteristics of nurses in dementia care ]

[The aim of the study: Studies underline the increasing burden of dementia people. Hungarian social care system is also facing dementia care challenge. In case of developing of social sector, it is beneficial to research the psychosocial status of nurses working in dementia care. Material and method: N=130 professional caregivers in dementia care filled out self- administered questionnaires. Standardized health-psychological scales were evaluated: SWLS, Rahe’s Life Meaning, Beck’s Inventory of Measuring Depression, Maastricht Vital Exhaustion, Freudenberger’s Burn Out Inventory. Results: Caregivers have fatigue, dissatisfaction and tendency of quitting profession. Scales show high burn-out, exhaustion and depression and show correlations. Depression correlates with vital exhaustion (r=0.549), depression moves with burn out r=0,528. SWLS correlates opposite with Vital Exhaustion: r = - 366. Coherence and SWLS shows statistically significance correlation: r=0,455. Conclusion: Indicators apply nurses are in risk conditions. More focus on workplace satisfaction, psychosocial care and stress management training is essential. .]

[Investigation of nurses eating habits]

[The aim of the study: was to assess the characteristics of diet among nurses in relation to socio-demographic and workplace related factors. Methods: The survey was conducted in 2015 through a self-constructed online questionnaire. Data were analyzed with SPSS 22.0 using chi square, Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests. Results: Sixty percent of the 548 involved nurses are overweight. Monthly overtime correlates negatively with the number of daily meals (p=0.003) with having hot meals (p=0.022) and with the opinion about dietary habits (p=0.001). Calm meals are typical for 30%, eating vegetables, fruits and whole grain bakery products for 20% and only 24.3% drinks two litres per day. Having children has beneficial effects on dietary habits. Conclusions: It can be concluded that the majority of the nurses included are overweight and they have dissatisfactory diet. The reasons for these might be rooted in the characteristics of the job and the Hungarian eating habits.]

[The effects of perceived work-related stress on the life style, health and sleep of nurses]

[Aim of the research: The present study aim to assess how the stress level influences the life style, health and sleep. Research and sampling methods: A self-developed questionnaire was administered online during April and May 2015 (N=556). SPSS 9.0 was used for the data analysis; chi square, independent samples t-test and Spearman’s rank correlation were applied (p<0.05). Results: The higher the level of perceived stress is at work, the worse the self-rated health condition (p<0.001), quality (p<0.001) and quantity (p<0.001) of sleep and dietary habits (p<0.001) are. In the group with higher stress level at work intermittent insomnia (p=0.009) and tired mornings (p<0.001) were more frequent. Participants reported their meals to be irregular (p<0.001) and hasty (p=0.006). There were no significant differences regarding chronic illnesses and addictions compared to the group with lower work-related stress levels. Conclusions: According to these results the level of work-related stress correlates negatively with dietary habits, sleep and self-reported health status. ]

[The importance of health-centered approach in the management of hypertensive patients]

[In the everyday clinical practice the main objectives are the accurate establishment of the diagnosis and evidence based treatment of diagnosed disease. Besides the accustomed, rigorously medical, simplifying aspect, the bio-psycho- social approach is gaining an increasing importance. The objective of the article is, taking modern definition of health into account, emphasizing the importance of a new approach in the complex management of patients, having primary hypertension, a disease, impairing not only target organs, as well as the whole person, seriously influencing the health status of the affected person. In the management of a hypertensive patient, besides decreasing blood pressure, preventing and treating target organ complications and coexisting diseases, we should assess the whole person impairment, the effects of environmental and personal factors, and their influence on activities of daily living and participation in the life of the society, consequently, the changes in health status. This complex approach permits alone the more complete restoration of health of an affected person.]
