[Nursing Aspects of Communication with Conscious Patients Receiving Mechanical Ventilation]

[Aim of the study: The authors aimed to represent the verbal and non-verbal communication of intensive care unit nurses and reveal the difficulties they face when communicating with conscious patients receiving mechanical ventilation. Sample and methods: The study was conducted with the participation of nurses working in three intensive care units of Semmelweis University, with the use of a questionnaire that was filled in by 59 nurses. Results: There was a significant difference in the quality of communication between the day shift and the night shift (p<0.001). The workload of nurses has an impact on the effectiveness of their communication. The number of patients in the day shift (p=0.016) is also crucial and having a part-time job is determinant in the night shift (p=0,026). In both shifts, burnout of nurses had considerable effect on their communication with conscious patients who receive mechanical ventilation (day shift p=0.007; night shift=0.030), while their empathy did not. Conclusions: The environmental factors influenced the effectiveness of communication. Establishing contact with patients receiving mechanical ventilation can be improved by appropriate education of nurses, thus, the authors put forward a proposal for trainings on the subjects of communication and counselling.]

[Application of „The Parental Belief Scale for Parents of Hospitalized Children” questionnaire in Hungarian language]


[Aim of the study: Beliefs about parental role and efficacy was shown to be important in adaptation to child’s hospitalization; there is a lack of adequate measure of this construct, however. Our aim was the evaluation of the Hungarian version of The Parental Belief Scale for Parents of Hospitalized Children (PBS; Melnyk, 1994) assessing parents’ beliefs about their ability to understand and predict their children’s behaviours and emotions, as well as to participate in their children’s care during hospitalization. Sample and methods: The Hungarian version of the PBS was evaluated using a back-translation process. One hundred parents of hospitalized children in Heim Pál Children’s Hospital, Department of Surgery and Traumatology fulfilled the measure along with questionnaires regarding demographics, general parental self-efficacy and state-anxiety. Results: The Hungarian version of the PBS showed excellent internal consistency (α=0,94), and good stability (r=0,85 p<0,001). A significant positive correlation of medium effect size was found between PBS scores and general parental self-efficacy (r=0,30 p=0,025). Parent’s state anxiety was significantly negatively related to their self-efficacy beliefs regarding hospital setting (r=-0,48 p<0,001). Conclusion: The Hungarian version of the PBS was shown to be a reliable and valid instrument for measuring efficacy-beliefs of parents of hospitalized children.]

[Health concept of nursing students (BSc)]


[Aim of the study: Assessing the effect of health pedagogy and health development courses on the health concept of nursing students (BSc). The authors assumed that attending these courses will enhance the health perception of the students. Sample and methods: This follow-up study was conducted in September 2013 and in May 2014 involving second-year nursing students (N=61). Drawing and discussing the pictures provided the material for the analysis. Results: Physical, social and emotional dimensions were the most emphatic at both samplings, whereas after the courses the importance of mental, spiritual dimensions and society was significantly higher. The pictures were more detailed (p<0.001), the number of each dimension and their elements was elevated. The importance of living and natural environment was also present. Conclusions: Attending the courses in health pedagogy and health development enhances and broadens the health concept of nursing students.]

[The malnutrition and the possibilities of its therapy in childhood]


[Malnutrition is a very important clinical condition in pediatrics. However, undernutrition as negative impact on length hospital stay, risk of infection and health care costs. Moerver, it also effects the cognitive development of children. STONG is an easy-to use screening tool that can be recorded in a few minutes, and it does not require special knowledge measurement or follow-up. In Kaposi Mór Hospital (Kaposvár) the risk of malnutrition was assessed by STRONG nutritonal risk screening tool in 31 patient of child-gastroenterology ambulatory (02.01.2014-30.06.2014). In case of malnutrition counselling and use of special formulas are essential besides evaluating tehe cause of malnutrition.]

[Contact between the polycystic ovary syndrome and the metabolic syndrome]


[Aim of the study: The objective of my thesis was to examine the presence of metabolic syndrome with the disorder of glucose metabolism among patients diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Sample and methods: 98 female patients diagnosed with PCOS, aged 18-45, took part in the retrospective quantitative study, anthropometric data and laboratory parameters relevant to metabolic profile were analysed. We applied descriptive statistics with SPSS 17 software, as well as Chi2-test and regression analysis (p <0.05) Results: 46% of the study population were found to be overweight. There was a significant correlation between BMI index and blood pressure and lipid profile (p<0.05). Metabolic syndrome was confirmed by more than 40% of the patients Conclusion: The PCOS is an endocrine disease, which affects multiple organ systems. The patients should be screened towards metabolic syndrome to achieve a correct diagnosis, regardless of the BMI values. The findings of our research and the confirmed correlations highlight the need for a development in care protocols.]

[Assessment of multidisciplinary teams in psychiatric care – Lessons of three focus groups ]

[Our research group, has studied psychiatric and psycho­the­ra­peutic teams since 2015. The aim of the present research was to identify the Hun­garian characteristics of team composition and operation. Qualitative focus group survey has been conducted on the operation of multidisciplinary teams at the annual conferences of the Hungarian Psychiatric Society in 2017, 2018 and 2019. These three groups focused on the issues of leadership, communication within the team, and competencies. The groups of an average of 17 people formed spontaneously by participation of professionals with different qualifications. The main results of the focus groups were as follows: 1. The various ty­pes of leadership within the team require the distribution and allocation of res­pon­si­bilities and roles and stop the dest­­ruc­tions. 2. Wi­thin the teams there are pre­vai­ling the informal channels of communication. 3. It is im­portant to clarify com­petencies and responsibilities. 'Actually, psy­chiat­ric spe­cia­lists' list of competencies there is not available in Hungary. It seems necessary to define more precisely and reconsider the professional competences of the specialized training in psychiatry and integrating these in the education, further promote the development of „list of competences in psychiatric specialization” by the legislators. The second phase of the research continues as a quantitative study based on the foregoing results gained by questionnaires. ]

[How to break medical bad news? The importance of the course for breaking medical bad news and an evaluation of his curriculum]


[Breaking bad news to patients is a difficult task for health care professionals and there are many unsolved issues in this area. There are several ways of delivering bad news and the quality of the communication could affect the whole life of the patient. However the wrongly delivered bit of bad news could not only cause a crisis for the recipient but will create a stressful situation for the communicator. The course created at the University of Pécs, Faculty of Health Sciences is specified to the delivery of bad news with modern communication methods, which uses video feedback method to analyse and develop the participants’ communicational attitude, thus providing potent aid for the acquisition of the proper communicational techniques, from which both the patient and the care giver can profit.]

[The effects of caring for children who have suffered trauma on pediatric nurses]

[Aim of the study: In case of children suffering trauma immediate care taking psychological aspests into consideration is very important. However, for the caregivers going through these cases cause secondary traumatization and increased mental burden, and they are not provided with professional help to process these, which ultimately may lead to burn-out. Sample and method: The authors have carried out a questionnaire survey among pediatric nurses at Pediatric Surgery Departments (N=90) and as a control group at Internal Medicine Departments (N=90) of five hospitals. Results: Significant differences were found between the two groups, as the nurses working at pediatric trauma departments consider their work as mentally more burdensome, they think the children’s mental care is important and would like to have a full-time psychologist at the ward. Besides they have encountered significantly higher number of cases in which they were unable to respond properly to the children’s psychological reactions. This have ultimately affected their family relations, and they also need trainings and help to mentally process these cases. Significant difference was found in the Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale scores too. Conclusions: In pediatric traumatology departments it would worth greater emphasis on helping nurses with their emotional processing of traumas, on recognizing symptoms of secondary traumatization and on adequate training.]
