Rude Radical Reductionism - Ede Frecska's reflection on Neuromania

FRECSKA Ede

This rudely radical reductionism is not a characteristic of the neuroscientific field only. A behavioral psychologist would state that you are not more than a package of adaptive behavioral patterns, a radical social psychologist would say that you are not more than the sum of social roles, or a classical psychoanalyst would suppose that you are a bunch of complexes. Richard Dawkins has moved in another direction stating that we are vessels of selfish genes.

Újabb eredmények a Parkinson-kór kutatásában

VÉCSEI László

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is associated with progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta. It is the death of these cells which results in the dopamine depletion related symptoms of bradykinesia, rigidity and tremor. However, other brain areas also degenerate and alternative neurotransmitter systems are affected and cause features such as depression, cognitive impairment, falls and autonomic dysfunction.

NEUROLOGY ROUND: NEUROPEPTIDES lntroduction

The concept of peptide secretion by neurons was first proposed by Scharrer and Scharrer in 1940, but only recently have more detailed characteristics of the peptide neuron emerged. The revelation of endogenous opioid peptides in mammalian brain, and establishment of the ubiquitous presence of many other neuroactive peptides throughout the central nervous system during the mid 1970-s, introduced new dimensions into mammalian neurobiology.

THE PRINCIPLES OF GENE THERAPY FOR GENETIC DISEASES OF MUSCLE (DUCHENNE DYSTROPHY), SPINAL MOTOR NEURONS (SPINAL MUSCULAR ATROPHY) AND SCHWANN CELLS (SCHWANNOPATHIES)

GYULA Acsadi, ÁGNES Jani, HANNS Lochmüller, GEORGE Kárpáti

Gene replacement therapy using adenoviral vectors in genetic diseases of the motor unit is a potential treatment modality. ln preclinical experiments, promising results have been obtained by dystrophin minigene replacement in mdx mice. There are several serious problems that remain to be resolved (i. e. immunologically mediated elimination of transduced cells) before this approach can be used in human clinical trials.
