In 1887 the Danish surgeon Saxtorph described intravesical electrical stimulation (IVES) for the “atonic bladder” by inserting a transurethral catheter with a metal stylet in it and with a neutral electrode on the lower abdomen. In 1899 two Viennese surgeons, Frankel-Hochwart and Zuckerkandl stated that intravesical electrotherapy was more effective in inducing detrusor contractions than external faradization.
