[Gastroesophageal reflux is an extremely com­mon problem encountered in everyday clini­cal practice. A number of factors and mecha­nisms may be responsible for the develop­ment of gastroesophageal reflux disease. During the last decade a vast number of papers have been published on this subject. The purpose of this article is to highlight our current understanding of this disorder. The author reviews the epidemiology, patho­ physiology, symptoms, diagnosis , complicati­ons, non-medical , medical and surgical the­rapy of gastroesophageal reflux disease. Long­ term treatment strategy, management of eso­phageal strictures and Barrett' s esophagus are also discussed. The present recommendations, medical and surgical therapeutical managements offered in this field in Hungary are also summarized.]
