[Gastroesophageal reflux is an extremely common problem encountered in everyday clinical practice. A number of factors and mechanisms may be responsible for the development of gastroesophageal reflux disease. During the last decade a vast number of papers have been published on this subject. The purpose of this article is to highlight our current understanding of this disorder. The author reviews the epidemiology, patho physiology, symptoms, diagnosis , complications, non-medical , medical and surgical therapy of gastroesophageal reflux disease. Long term treatment strategy, management of esophageal strictures and Barrett' s esophagus are also discussed. The present recommendations, medical and surgical therapeutical managements offered in this field in Hungary are also summarized.]
