Perinatal asphyxia, i.e. failure to initiate and sustain breathing at birth, is one of the most frequent and serious clinical problems in neonatology1. According to World Health Organization estimates, around 3% of approximately 120 million infants born every year in developing countries present birth asphyxia requiring resuscitation, and about 900,000 of these infant die each year1. In clinical terms perinatal asphyxia is an insult to the fetus or newborn due to lack of oxygen or lack of perfusion to various organs.
